Our Story

A couch was sacrificed for this game.

It began with a love of beautiful tables, a room full of people who wanted to join in, and one question: could Mahjong welcome the strategist, the storyteller, the cocktail-holder, the grandparent, and the grandchild—all at the same table?

It started beautifully

I loved the game. Then I discovered the tablescape.

When I discovered American Mahjong, I was hooked. I learned with friends using a card, dice, and extra-large plain tiles. Then I discovered that Mahjong could also include a beautifully set table—and that was the end of restraint.

There were mats, lamps, gongs, semiprecious stone dice, beautifully crafted wooden racks and, apparently, special holders for the dice. Did I need a dice holder? Absolutely not. Did I want one immediately? Of course.

I may love the tablescape as much as the game. Possibly more.

So I went all in. I gave away a perfectly good couch and replaced it with a table, new chairs, tablecloths, mats, tiles, lamps, racks, dice, and all the little treasures that make a space feel special. Our Mahjong corner stayed out all the time. It was not game equipment to hide in a closet. It had become part of our home.

The beautiful problem

The table drew people in. The card sometimes sent them back out.

American Mahjong is wonderfully strategic. It asks players to read patterns, make decisions, and pivot when the tiles change. That is exactly what makes it exciting—and exactly why it is not every guest's preferred kind of fun.

Friends loved our setup, but some saw a card full of patterns and politely backed away. The talker, the cocktail-holder, and the person convinced they were “not a game person” wanted to gather with us; they simply needed another doorway into Mahjong.

The turning point

Then the grandkids and grandparents started playing.

While learning about other forms of Mahjong, I found an approachable rhythm rooted in traditional Chinese Mahjong: make four sets and a pair. It could be taught quickly, played conversationally, and still offered plenty of room for strategy.

Soon our grandchildren, parents, beginners, strategists, and yes—our talking-and-cocktail-holding friends—were all playing without missing a beat. Teaching was no longer the obstacle. Scoring accurately and keeping a whole social group connected was the next puzzle.

Dragon Point Mahjong™

Keep the beautiful tiles. Open the game to more people.

Dragon Point Mahjong™ is physically played with the American or Chinese Mahjong tile set and dice you already own. We created a distinct scoring system, flexible table play, optional rotations, Host Choice Hands, five award paths, clear printable guides, and a Guided Phone Scorer to handle the calculations and tracking.

Play every day with a spouse or family, gather 2–4 friends around one table, or invite a larger group and rotate players through the room. The host creates the game, players join for free, and the app keeps everyone connected through hand scores, Club Points, rankings, and awards.

Five different awards give everyone something to chase, because calling Mahjong should not be the only reason to care about the next tile.

The best review

Our game table stopped being a special occasion.

Dragon Point Mahjong™ became part of daily life in our home. My husband now happily plays both American Mahjong and Dragon Point Mahjong™. My mom asks us to play again and again. Our grandchildren come over wanting to head straight for the Mahjong table. We keep an ongoing family game in the scoring app and let the standings—and the friendly bragging—continue.

When several generations genuinely want one more hand, that is the review that matters most.

The story behind HOIJIN™

“Hold on, I'm joining in now!”

My son used to say that whenever he was gaming with friends. He is off to college now, but we still play games together—and that little phrase became HOIJIN™. It captures what we want every game we create to say: there is room for you at the table.

We live and play on Florida's east coast, surrounded by barrier islands, the Atlantic Ocean, and the waterways of the Indian and Banana rivers. At the southern tip of Merritt Island, Annie the Dragon once guarded her eggs and watched over the meeting place of two rivers. That sense of place, memory, and coastal wonder flows through everything we make.

Dragon Point Mahjong™ is where HOIJIN™ begins. HOIJIN™ reimagines familiar games so they are easier to join, beautiful enough to live with, and worth gathering around. Palais Seven and other ideas are already taking shape.

Join In. Play Something New.
